Road to Nowhere

The highways between Malmo and Ystad, Lund and Trelleborg cross at Svedala, which is presumably the reason for new housing and large - for Sweden - just out of town furniture and car outlets.

I have passed through on four rides - all of which have featured at least one puncture and failed to record properly on my Garmin.

On the other hand, we saw G's Malmo FF win the Svedala cup there yesterday.

Lost for words

I am eating herring and struggling with Svenska for utlandska studenter (Swedish for Asylum-seekers).  In Chapter 1 I met Lina, who studies English and German in Lund. She washes on Tuesday and jogs on Wednesday. Hon skratter inte ofta - she doesn't often laugh. In Chapter 2 I met Steve. He studies chemistry at Lund but seldom reads and seldom cuts his hair. Han köper manga öl - he buys many beers.

Guess which one is English and which one is Swedish.

Sweden: Crime against literature

Literature in Denmark has a more central role than in Sweden. Per Svensson has met Lars Bukdahl - Denmark's powerful literary critic.

Lars Bukdahl is one of Denmark's most powerful and most controversial literary critic.

That first sentence is an expression of differences between the Danish literary landscape and the Swedish. In Sweden, there is hardly a literary critic who could claim to be either one, influential, or the other, controversial. It is linked to nor the literature play a central role in Sweden.

It is often said that matches are determined at midfield. In Sweden, the literary midfield gradually weakened. The audience-centric quality literature has been withdrawn. Instead, we have a polarization - having on one flank, an ever more dominant and confident bestseller culture and on the other on the margin, closed and self-sufficient avant-garde literature.
